Historically, glue only refers to protein colloid adhesives prepared from animal tissues, such as hide glue, bone glue, or fish glue.

Arts and crafts projects—such as bonding lace, rhinestones and trims as embellishments to clothing, wood or home décor items—all require adhesives.

Around 1750, the first glue or adhesive patent was issued in Britain. The glue was made from fish. Patents were then rapidly issued for adhesives using natural rubber, animal bones, fish, starch, milk protein or casein.
